Three Souls
Life-soul, Principal-soul, Awareness-soul
Seven Spirits
(Seven Emotions) Joy, anger, sorrow, fear, love, hatred, desire
Six Desires
(Tangible) Eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, mind

(Intangible) Form, body, scent, taste, touch, dharma The three souls reside in the back of the brain (awareness-soul [spirit]), the heart chakra (principal-soul [qi]), and the root chakra (life-soul [essence]).The seven spirits are scattered throughout the five viscera and six bowels, interlocked with one another and linked to the three souls.Memories (signals) from past lives still follow the three souls and seven spirits.

A person has three souls, the life-soul, principal-soul and awareness-soul, and through them the seven spirits are connected within the body.

The high-wisdom spiritual energy in the brain descends to teach and transform the past spirits gathered in the heart-soul.This place is called the "Hall of Persuasion and Transformation." This term appears again and again in Journey Through Hell, yet people do not realize that the Hall of Persuasion and Transformation is actually in the heart. When you understand that a spirit can divide and produce another "you," you will understand why you lose some of your spiritual power; and that spirit can think on its own, and may even be your descendant, relative, or parent. An analogy makes this clearer. In a former life you had one daughter, and she in turn had two sons; at that point you had already divided into three spirits. After you died and were reborn, your three spirits were still living on in that former life, while you were born as a human once again in this one. When, one day, the three spirits spawned from your former life die, they will come looking for you in the end, only in a different order. Two phenomena then appear. The spirit with low spiritual power attaches to you, which is commonly called "being trodden by the yin" (kaYin); this occurs by the principle of attraction between like magnetic fields.A spirit with high spiritual power also attaches to you, which is commonly called spirit possession.Of course, there are also cases where a spirit of your former life died earlier than you and was reborn before you; the sorrow of the elder burying the younger is common enough. In such a case, it is inevitable that your own parents may turn out to be one of your own past spirit-bodies.The immortals of old knew how to refine the elixir, which in truth meant refining the spirit into a "golden embryo," and the golden embryo means gathering back together all of your soul-light from the past. But before the golden embryo can be recovered, you must first purify the spirit-bodies within your own body, otherwise there will only ever be "yin-trampling" and possession.Know that purifying your own spirit-bodies at the same time increases the wisdom of your self-nature; therefore wisdom must first be opened, so that you have the wisdom to teach and transform your past selves.Your past self (the spirit) belongs to yin, while you in the world of the living belong to yang, and the imbalance of yin and yang causes harm to yourself, needless to say.According to scientific research, the human brain uses less than 10% of its capacity; even the wisest of people use only 10%!What does this show?It means that after many lifetimes of dividing spirits, the soul-light and wisdom of humankind have dropped very far.Why do buddhas and bodhisattvas have such great wisdom?Because their soul-light and wisdom far surpass that of humans! In other words, the spiritual power of lower animals is lower still, even less than 1% (the faster and more abundantly a creature reproduces, the lower its wisdom and the more scattered its spiritual power). The immortals of old, with their ethereal bearing, first sublimated their own spiritual power, and so possessed more power than ordinary people (called supernatural powers or extrasensory abilities today).Everyone has dharma power and supernatural powers; you simply do not know how to raise them!As the saying goes: "Wine and meat pass through the gut, the Buddha remains in the heart." Almost everyone has heard this saying, but who has thought about it: if the Buddha really exists within the human body, where in the body is he?In each of the major organs, and in the brain, there is a Buddha who governs it.For example, the five viscera and six bowels are closely related to the seven emotions and six desires: as thoughts, desires and emotions arise, the body produces corresponding changes (secretions), and the balance of the endocrine glands governs health.Within the human body, just as in all things, the five elements generate and restrain one another, support and help one another, and draw on one another in subtle transformations.Does the Buddha exist within? From this you can get an idea.Body, mind and spirit are likewise interlinked.Spiritual practice is the purification and elevation of body, mind and spirit. The elevation of the body depends on the mind to sustain it; the elevation of the mind depends on the purification of the spirit; and a purified spirit requires a healthy body and mind as its foundation. There are many methods of practice, such as those of the various religions. But whatever the method, you must first purify your own mind and spirit.Purifying the mind and spirit means eliminating the karmic obstructions and karmic retribution of many lifetimes, just as a healthy body requires first clearing out the impurities and germs and then replenishing the missing nutrients. It is commonly known that the brain is where memory and thought reside. But few people know that the human body is made up of cells, and each cell has its own memory and even its own reflexes. For example, every kind of cell knows what it should do and where it should go, and can even tell whether other cells in the body are "its own." A line from an advertisement said: "Good bacteria can eat up the bad bacteria." Does this not mean that each organ has its own memory bank?Come to think of it!Why do we all long for heaven and want to avoid hell?Does this not also mean that heaven and hell are things in our own memory banks? While everyone is searching for where heaven and hell are, who would guess that heaven and hell are both inside our own bodies?!Imagine that one day a person were to enter his own body for a tour.He would discover that the bacteria, cells and cilia too small for the naked eye become giant monsters and mountain ranges, and even the cilia become terrifying mountains of knives. The mucus in the stomach (the cauldron of boiling oil) becomes a swamp in which one can hardly take a step, the dreadful stomach acid corrodes everything, and other secretions, blood cells, enzymes and so on appear as even more fearsome monsters.A human soul is very small, so this tour inside the body is, in other words, hell. So, will a person really go to hell after death? We all know that a person has three souls and seven spirits, and that after death they leave the physical body and go to an unknown place. The key point is "how they leave," and that is the crux. The three souls reside in the back of the brain (awareness-soul [spirit]), the heart chakra (principal-soul [qi]) and the root chakra (life-soul [essence]), and connect with the seven spirits at the heart.Because the five viscera and six bowels also have the capacity to sense and think (the seven emotions and six desires), they drive a person to do whatever is needed. If a person's spiritual nature is not high, he loses his judgment (low wisdom) and does evil [the "heart" between the seven spirits and three souls cannot stop him from doing wrong].While he enjoys the pleasure of doing wrong, the seven spirits record it, leaving signals behind (like software recording to a computer). When this person dies one day and the three souls and seven spirits are about to leave the body, these signals turn into dreadful punishments, which is the meaning of hell's tortures.Hell is divided into ten courts, and the ten Yama Kings of these ten courts govern the ten major organs, the nerves, the immune system, and so on of the human body. When the soul leaves the body in sequence, one spirit is withdrawn in each seven-day cycle, and after forty-nine days all seven spirits are withdrawn; even if the physical body is damaged or incomplete, the spirit-body still retains its memories.So-called rebirth is determined by the soul-light the spirit-body has gathered. Each person's soul-light differs according to his or her level of cultivation, and varies in strength; this is precisely the principle of "like gathers with like." If the intensity of the soul-light is at the same level as that of cats and dogs, then after leaving the body and undergoing punishment, the soul will automatically be born into the body of a cat or dog. This too is the unchanging law of cause and effect.

Rinpoche emphasizes repeatedly: to end the cycle of samsara, harmonize the magnetic field, and purify karmic creditors, the most direct method is offering a Five-Element Stupa. Combined with ritual dedication and mantra practice, it progressively elevates one's soul-light. Fahsilin's altar has actual Five-Element Stupas available for request.
