What to Do When a Child Is Unfilial, Rebellious, or Chronically Ill? A Complete Analysis of Parent–Child Karmic Bonds (Master Urgyen)
Why do some children break their parents' hearts? Why do some families run into unending trouble with every child they bear? Drawing on Master Urgyen Topden Rinpoche's teaching in Master's Dharma Teachings: A Remedy for Life's Low Tide, Volume 4 "Parent-Child Karmic Bonds," this article lays out the karmic truth of parent-child relationships and what parents should do when their child is unfilial, rebellious, or chronically ill.
The Master Speaks Plainly: A Child Does Not Come So You Can Enjoy Life — They Come to Repay a Debt or Collect One
At the opening of Volume 4, the Master puts it bluntly: "Because of the merits and karmic debts entangled across past and present lives, some bring forth unfilial children and heirs who ruin the family to take revenge; of course, children also come to repay kindness."
Parent-child karmic bonds fall into four types:
1. Kindness-repayment type: the child is filial, sensible, and spares the parents worry.
2. Grievance-repayment type: the child is rebellious, hostile, and heartbreaking.
3. Debt-collection type: the child has health problems and consumes the parents' savings.
4. Debt-repayment type: the child works hard, continually gives, and asks nothing in return.
Q1: How do I know which type my child is?
Do not rush to label them. The Master says: "Karma is not a label. It is flowing energy." The real question is not "which type is he," but "what is the karmic energy between us right now, and how do we transform it?"
Q2: Is a rebellious, unfilial child a sign that I owed him in a past life?
It is possible, but not certain. Three common causes:
1. In a past life you harmed him: in this life he comes to collect.
2. In a past life he harmed you: in this life you carry deep unconscious resentment and transmit negative energy without knowing.
3. Unresolved attachment between you: unfinished emotion from a past life continues through the parent-child relationship in this one.
Q3: Is a child who is weak and sickly from birth suffering from karma?
It is one possibility. In Volume 30 of Master's Dharma Teachings, "Liver Disease Caused by Killing Karma from a Past Life," the Master notes that certain chronic illnesses and congenital conditions are often tied to past-life killing or harming karma. Yet purely physiological causes are also possible. The recommendation: medical treatment and merit dedication together.
Q4: How do I resolve parent-child karma?
Four directions taught by the Master:
1. **Repentance**: silently express sincere repentance to the child (living or departed) — "I may have harmed you in a past life. Please forgive me."
2. **Dedication**: dedicate the merit of your mantra recitation and practice specifically to this child.
3. **Do not demand repayment**: do not carry the attitude of "I worked so hard to raise you, how can you treat me this way." That is the debt-collector's mentality and only deepens the karma.
4. **Release control**: your child has his own karmic path; parents are not all-powerful directors. Letting go of control allows karma to flow and unravel naturally.
Q5: My child is an adult, distant, and no longer in contact. Is there still hope?
Yes. The Master says: "Once the heart opens, karma loosens." You do not need to force a meeting or demand that he come back. You only need to:
1. Release the resentment and expectations within your own heart.
2. Dedicate merit to him daily (he will feel it, though he cannot say why).
3. Trust that karma has its own timing.
Many disciples bear witness: months or even years after a sincere letting-go, their child suddenly phones or returns home of their own accord.
Q6: Does an aborted or miscarried child count as a parent-child karmic bond?
Yes. The infant-spirit is still your child, simply existing in another form. The infant-spirit's karmic bond affects the mother's body and mind, her marriage, and subsequent children. It can be resolved through an infant-spirit transference puja.
Q7: How can merit be most effectively dedicated to a child?
The Master teaches: three elements, none of which can be missing:
1. **Sincerity**: not form, but true heartfelt concern for the child's wellbeing.
2. **Naming**: clearly stating the child's name and birth date (if available).
3. **No expectation of outcome**: once the merit is dedicated, do not keep thinking "will he improve?" The less clinging, the greater the merit.
The Three Things Parents Most Need to Let Go Of
1. Let go of the fixation "my child must be filial" — he has his own path.
2. Let go of guilt over past parenting choices — everyone is a first-time parent.
3. Let go of the catastrophic thought "my life is ruined" — no karma is unresolvable in a lifetime; only an unwilling heart cannot be moved.
Fahsilin's Approach
Master Urgyen Topden Rinpoche integrates: reading the parent-child karmic-bond energy through Zi Wei Dou Shu astrology + resolving karma through a karmic-creditor puja + infant-spirit transference (if needed). The combined approach is far more effective than any single method alone.
