How Does Buddhism Explain Parallel Timelines? 7 Questions on the Yuan-Chen Palace, Quantum Multiverses, and the Future Self
What are parallel timelines? How does Buddhism view the quantum multiverse? What is the relationship between the Yuan-Chen Palace and parallel timelines? Drawing on Master Urgyen Topden Rinpoche's teaching in Master's Dharma Teachings: A Remedy for Life's Low Tide, Volume 31 "Parallel Timelines," this article answers 7 questions about multidimensional time and space from a Buddhist perspective.
Q1: How does Buddhism explain parallel timelines?
In Volume 31 the Master states plainly: "We live in this space, but in another parallel timeline there is another 'me.' Whatever happens to us here, that 'me' in the other timeline experiences the same."
The Buddhist concept of the dharmadhātu already encompasses innumerable dimensions; what people call parallel timelines is simply one of its manifestations. Those with deep meditative practice can simultaneously perceive multiple "selves" existing across different timelines.
Q2: Are parallel timelines the same as the folk-tradition Yuan-Chen Palace?
The Master affirms: "The principle is exactly the same as the Taiwanese folk practice of observing the Yuan-Chen Palace."
Yuan-Chen Palace (natal palace in Taiwanese folk belief): entering, through meditation or ritual, the palace where one's "primordial essence" resides, and observing its current state.
Parallel timelines: entering the space where one's "other-dimensional self" exists, and observing that version of oneself.
At heart, both are: **in a meditative state, consciousness crosses the limits of the present time-space to see another time-space version of you.**
Q3: Between the parallel-timeline me and the present me, which is real?
The Buddhist answer is surprising: **both are real, and both are unreal**.
Real: both are genuine manifestations of consciousness.
Unreal: neither is a "fixed, unchanging self."
Using the Heart Sutra, the Master puts it: "Form is emptiness, emptiness is form" — every self across every timeline is a temporary manifestation of gathered conditions.
Q4: How do I enter my own parallel timeline? To what level must one practice?
Three conditions are required:
1. A foundation in meditation (able to focus on one object for at least 30 minutes).
2. A clear mind (no emotional interference; no clinging to "what I want to see").
3. Guidance from a qualified Master (to avoid demonic or illusory states).
The Master specifically warns: "Not everyone should pursue this. Seeing it only adds more clinging. Better to live this life well first."
Q5: Does my parallel-timeline self affect my present-life self?
Yes. The Master teaches: "If 'I' in another timeline is suffering in hell, then after I die, I fall into hell."
Conversely, if your other-timeline self is practicing or in the virtuous realms, after death your consciousness is more easily led toward that version. This is why **parallel timelines are, in effect, the future** — some version of you in another timeline is your future.
Q6: Then how do I "influence" my parallel-timeline self?
Three methods:
1. Mantra recitation and dedication: dedicate the merit of your practice specifically to your selves in other timelines (the Master says: "It benefits more than just this one life").
2. Visualization with virtuous intent: each night before sleep, visualize your parallel-timeline self also practicing virtue and resting in peace.
3. Refuse negative cycles: the clinging and resentment of this life are co-resonated simultaneously by all your timeline-selves. Letting go in this life means letting go in every timeline.
Q7: Are parallel timelines the same as past and future lives?
No.
Past and future lives: a "vertical" reincarnation along the time axis (past me → present me → future me).
Parallel timelines: "horizontal" alternate selves at the same point in time (this-timeline me ‖ other-timeline me).
The two **exist simultaneously**. In this life, you carry the vertical karma of past and future lives and the horizontal resonance of parallel timelines.
Why Does the Master Teach This?
In closing, the Master emphasizes: "This is not to make you study metaphysics. It is to let you know that every thought and every action is simultaneously affecting all your selves across every timeline."
This is why practice requires **mindfulness of each thought**. You think you are only affecting this one life — in reality, you are affecting the entire dharmadhātu version of you.
