The Soul's Exit Determines Your Direction

📖Master’s Reading

At death, from which part of the body the soul leaves determines its future destination. The truth of the dharmadhātu is: if it exits from the soles, all go to the hell realm; from the knees, the animal realm; from the belly, the hungry-ghost realm; from the heart, the human realm; from the throat, the asura realm; from the brow, the god realm; only exiting from the crown is the buddha-path.

Without practice in ordinary time, at death sunk in fear and panic, the soul easily sinks led by karma. For example, folk custom often burns "foot-end money"; this is in fact a scheme of the underworld — the soul in darkness runs toward any light it sees, and if it goes toward the faint light at the soles, it plunges straight into hell. So never burn foot-end money; light a lamp at the crown; when the soul sees the light exit from the crown, at least it will not sink into the six realms.

Practicing "phowa" is precisely to keep practicing, while alive, concentrating consciousness at the crown chakra, forming the soul's habit of rising upward. Direction matters far more than speed; the great pass of life and death is never a deathbed scramble but the daily cultivation of upward stability. When your thought is toward good in ordinary time and you often keep the sense of brow and crown, the soul can meet its highest home without fear.
