The Soul Does Not Vanish with the Body
📖Master’s Reading
Facing death, people's fear often comes from the unknown of vanishing. The truth of the dharmadhātu is: life does not die — not that the body does not die, but that the soul does not die. Life after life the body keeps changing, but the soul's essence does not die; it only changes bodies.
Many fear death and the body's destruction. In truth, when a person faces death, as long as the mind separates from the soul, the soul does not die, nor experiences the pain of the body rotting or being cremated. The body is only the soul's brief vessel for learning in the human world, and decays naturally when the time comes. What truly continues life and carries memory into the future is the undying soul.
If while alive one clings too much to this skin-bag body, taking bodily sensation as the whole of life, at death the soul is gripped by clinging and cannot break free; when the soul is joined to the body, it feels great pain. True practice is, while alive, to practice separating soul from body, cutting the soul and body perfectly apart.
When you understand that the soul does not vanish with the body, you will not spend energy on material things that cannot be carried. Take the body's needs lightly, set down clinging to the shell, value the soul's ascent, and the soul can travel light at death, fearlessly meeting its bright home.
