A Human Birth Is Hard to Gain — Do Not Waste It

We take having this body for granted, but in the teaching of the "Four Thoughts That Turn the Mind," "this precious human birth, free and endowed, is hard to gain" is a truth we must deeply realize. In vast saṃsāra, not to fall into the hells, the animal realm or the hungry-ghost realm, and to possess sound limbs and mind, is itself great merit. How much more so that we are fortunate to be born in a land where the Dharma exists — a chance as rare as the sūtra's image of a sea turtle surfacing through a floating yoke's hole, or a mustard seed thrown at a wall and not falling.

Yet many spend their good years idly, thinking they will practice after retirement or study when they have time, forgetting that life comes with no guarantee. Never naively assume that if you do not practice this life, you can return in the next. Whether one will again gain a sound human body and the chance to hear the Dharma, no one can promise.

So we must give rise to a strong sense of urgency about practice. Each day, gently remind yourself: "This rare chance of a lifetime may come only once." This precious human body is the best ritual vessel for refining the soul. Cherish this priceless vessel of the present, do not put off the chance to awaken until tomorrow — to diligently practice the true Dharma in this life is the soul's only opportunity to leave the sea of saṃsāra's suffering.

• List three blessings you now possess and give thanks.
• Do not waste your good years waiting for tomorrow.
• Give rise to urgency about practice and seize this life.
• Cherish the ritual vessel of this human body; do not defer awakening to tomorrow.
