Life is like a mirror, and the running of the cosmos is a precise law. The truth of the dharmadhātu is: "The cosmos is a reflecting action; whatever you throw out runs back — this is Einstein's 'relativity,' and it holds." In short, "the cosmos is a reflecting motion; what you throw out is finally what comes back."

This is in fact the nature of cause and effect. "Cause and effect are a mirror's reflecting motion. You smile at the mirror — does the you inside not smile back?" When we give goodwill to this world, this goodwill finally returns to ourselves in different forms. It may not appear at once, nor necessarily come from the same person, but life always precisely responds to every seed we sow.

When people give, they habitually calculate return. Yet the cosmic law never shortchanges anyone. When you no longer count gain and loss and are willing to give warmth to others selflessly, throwing good thoughts to the dharmadhātu, the dharmadhātu naturally magnifies this energy and reflects doubled blessing back into your life. Rather than expect others to be good to you, actively become the one who first gives goodwill. What you give the world, the world responds with. Treating others well is in fact treating your future self well.
