May All Beings Never Part from Joy

📖Master’s Reading

True sympathetic joy is the remedy for jealousy. In practicing the "Four Immeasurables," the third step is to give rise to "joy": "May all beings never part from the sublime joy that is free of suffering." Yet after this line, one must likewise add the most important secret of transforming the mind: "and may my mind be glad too."

Worldly people habitually compare, and seeing others richer or more successful, jealousy that cannot bear another's good easily arises. The truth of the dharmadhātu is: you should like the rich, bless the rich, be glad for them. If jealousy arises and you hold an attitude of waiting to see them fall, this negative energy reflects back onto yourself as you wished, instead making you lack and suffer.

Others' happiness never lessens your happiness; others' success never blocks your success. "Sympathetic joy" is the most powerful remedy for jealousy and comparison. There is a law of relativity in the cosmos; when you are willing to sincerely bless others, this positive energy of rejoicing finally flows back to you. When you no longer envy and take others' joy as your own, nothing in this world can make you suffer, and your heart naturally abides always in the sublime joy free of suffering.

🌱Reflection for Daily Life

  • Others' happiness does not lessen your happiness.
  • Notice whether jealousy arises at others' achievements.
  • Understand that others' happiness does not lessen your own.
  • Today, sincerely praise and bless someone around you.
  • Set down comparison and feel the inner gladness of rejoicing and praising.
