May All Beings Be Endowed with Happiness

📖Master’s Reading

True loving-kindness is not pitying others from on high but sincerely wishing them happiness. In practicing the "Four Immeasurables," the first step is to give rise to "loving-kindness": "May all beings be endowed with happiness and the cause of happiness." The Rinpoche teaches profoundly that after this line one must add the most important secret of transforming the mind: "and may my mind attain happiness too."

We and the people and things around us are in fact a closely linked community of life. The Rinpoche pierces to the truth: if your family, partner or friends can all be endowed with happiness, do all they wish, and greet you kindly each day, how could your heart not be happy? So we must actively send out positive energy from within, letting all around us attain happiness.

When you sincerely bless others, even act to help others resolve affliction, and they show a smile because of your help, that joy becomes a mighty warm current that truly returns to you. Compassion was never a one-way loss. When your heart fully opens, willing to share blessing selflessly with all beings of the dharmadhātu, no longer selfishly seeking only your own good, your heart becomes boundlessly soft and bright. Wishing others happy, you too must attain happiness — this is the inconceivable power of "loving-kindness."
