The Seventh Consciousness Is the Gateway

We assume seeing is believing, not knowing this often stays at the surface perception of the first six consciousnesses — eye, ear, nose, tongue, body and mind. The first six consciousnesses belong to the worldly and material; birth, ageing, sickness, death and the eight sufferings all revolve here. If each day one chases joys and sorrows by fleeting sensation alone, letting the soul grasp at emotion, one can never accomplish practice.

True practice must set down self-righteous worldly cognition and begin from the deeper "seventh consciousness"; only then can one step out of the material prison and enter the pure buddha-nature. When we know how to settle ourselves through sitting meditation or reciting sūtras, no longer disturbed by outer sights and sounds, and begin to contemplate deep clinging inward, that is the entry point into the seventh consciousness.

Raising the mind to the seventh consciousness is like toiling up a high mountain and looking down. Then, looking back at the childish calculation and entanglement within the six consciousnesses, one is suddenly set free. You understand that afflictions that once felt unbearable are, from a higher dimension, no great matter at all. No longer hostage to fleeting emotion, seeing the pure self inward — this is the one and only gateway to practice.

• Raise the mind's height and realize afflictions are no great matter.
