Form and Emptiness Are Inherently Without Distinction
📖Master’s Reading
We habitually divide worldly things into good and bad, gain and loss, success and failure, and fret over them. Yet the core wisdom of the Prajñā Heart Sūtra — "form is not different from emptiness, emptiness is not different from form; form is emptiness, emptiness is form" — reminds us that in this realm there is fundamentally no distinction: form and emptiness are the same.
Worldly as we are, we are often deceived by the appearance before us: meeting adversity we feel suffering, meeting favorable conditions we feel joy. But when you refine a higher wisdom sharp as an X-ray, all you look at is transparent, without distinction. When your vision rises and the mind turns, seeing through that the nature of things is but the five aggregates all empty, you find that the pain and setback that seemed so real are not eternal, and all bad things may also become good things.
True practice is learning the wisdom of "no dual distinction." Many things the fleshly eye sees as bad are, seen with higher wisdom, in fact good. When we no longer cling to surface gain and loss and set down opposition and resistance, we understand that all that happens in life, including setbacks and misfortune, is in fact part of the soul's learning and growth. A mistake can be a teacher; harm can turn into the power to advance. When you are willing to change the angle, the world becomes different in an instant.
