Awakening Is Only the Starting Point of Practice
📖Master’s Reading
Many think awakening is the end of practice, as if once awakened one becomes a buddha and leaves all suffering. In truth, awakening is not the end but the beginning of real practice. The ordinary being is veiled by fleeting sensation; only by setting down worldly ties and self-righteous clinging, and raising the mind to a higher dimension of consciousness, can one truly awaken and see the truth of life.
Yet the hardest test comes only after awakening. To understand the principle does not mean the course of one's life will change on its own. Many have heard countless dharma teachings and believe they have grasped it, yet when faced with adversity and emotional trials they still act on their old habits and dispositions, with no real change. This is the vast gap between "knowing" and "doing."
True practice is, after seeing through the nature of things, to put it into practice step by step in daily life — using the prajñā-wisdom gained in awakening to mend a flawed destiny, and to break through by turning weakness into strength. Awakening is only the correct chart and compass the buddhas and bodhisattvas hand you. Only by turning "understanding" into actual "action," grounded in the transformation of the mind, and steering the soul toward the light, does one set foot on the path of ultimate liberation.
🌱Reflection for Daily Life
- Understand that awakening only hands you the chart to the light.
- Notice whether you stay in knowing yet fail to do.
- In adversity, turn dharma principle into an actual change of mind.
- Bravely face your weakness and mend your flawed destiny.
- Turning understanding into action — awakening is where real practice begins.
Awakening is not the end of practice but the start of seeing truth;
to understand is less than to do — grounding it in daily life is true practice.
