Awareness Is Understanding; Realization Is Seeing Through

📖Master’s Reading

On the path of practice, "awareness" is only the start; "realization" is the true going-deep. "Awareness" is to see clearly and understand. When we meet setback and the eight sufferings in life, the first step is to see clearly the truth of cause and effect, to understand that all meeting and loss have karma and dependent origination. When the heart knows "so it was meant to be," it no longer loses itself in pointless complaint and grievance.

Yet many, though "aware" and understanding the principle, still cannot let go; here further "realization" is needed. Only from feeling to full penetration is it true "awakened realization." "Realization" is to see to the ultimate and think through thoroughly, seeing through that all worldly phenomena are dreamlike bubbles of arising and ceasing. When you truly see to the ultimate, you find the love and hate and worldly fame you once clung to are, in truth, no great matter at all. Then the heart suddenly opens, realizing "so I should not have clung like that."

Understanding the principle matters, but only by moving from "awareness" to "realization," truly seeing through and loosening the tight grip, does the heart cease to be stirred by outer circumstances. When you fully awaken and realize, setting down clinging you should not hold, the course of life truly transforms, welcoming peace and ultimate liberation.

  • Notice whether you understand the principle yet cannot let go.
  • See clearly cause and effect and understand: so it was meant to be.
  • See through the nature and think it thoroughly: so I should not have.
