Bodily Suffering Is Easy to Cure, Mental Suffering Hardest to Heal

📖Master’s Reading

Eight or nine times out of ten, life does not go as we wish. Life's suffering can in fact be divided into "bodily suffering" and "mental suffering." Birth, ageing, sickness and death are the natural law this body must pass through; when the body falls ill it can still seek treatment. Yet parting from loved ones, not getting what we want, meeting those we resent, and the "blazing five aggregates" of emotional loss of control — these four formless "mental sufferings" are the deepest torment, hardest of all for the soul to heal.

Bodily pain is hard to bear, but what truly keeps one awake night and day is usually the clinging in the mind. Many ailments that medicine cannot cure are in fact "born of the mind," springing from unresolved wounds in the subconscious. What makes us suffer is not the matter itself but that we fix our eyes on the suffering and will not let go. When you cannot release the one who left, the wealth unattained, or the resented object, this clinging becomes an inner demon that torments you in return. For the mind's illness, no amount of medicine works; only the remedy of "prajñā-wisdom" can cure it at the root.

True practice is learning to remedy mental suffering. When we can use the Diamond Sūtra's emptiness-wisdom of "nothing is any great matter," seeing through that all in the world arises and ceases by conditions, no longer letting the mind be held hostage by outer circumstances, clinging naturally disperses. When you are willing to let go and the knot in the heart opens, the inner wound heals and the world before you naturally widens. This is the root way to pull out suffering completely and be reborn.

🌱Reflection for Daily Life

  • Understand that bodily suffering can still be cured, mental suffering hardest to heal.
  • Notice whether pain springs from clinging in the mind.
  • Use prajñā-wisdom to see through arising and ceasing.
  • Release clinging and open the knot, letting the heart widen.
  • Once the knot in the heart opens, the world before you naturally widens.
Teaching

Birth, ageing, sickness and death are the body's law; bodily suffering can seek a cure;

parting from loved ones and the rest are the mind's clinging — mental illness is healed only by prajñā.
