True Refuge

📖Master’s Reading

Refuge is not merely a surface rite but the establishing of a life direction. The truth of the dharmadhātu is: in modern society, many hearts lack security and drift about, like a lone ship without a compass on the vast sea, not knowing where it goes, unaware when storms come. If the heart has no settled place, it easily becomes a wandering lost soul, not knowing where the heart should go.

The meaning of true refuge is: "I give my heart out and place it here with the bodhisattva, give my heart to the guru, and then your refuge has a target and will not run wild." "Refuge (gui)" carries the sense of drawing the heart back, gathering in the mind that scatters and grasps outward; "reliance (yi)" is letting the heart have something to rely on, finding the protector who shelters and supports us. When we are willing to entrust the heart to the buddhas and bodhisattvas, it is like gaining life's chart and compass.

This is a precise navigation. Life's greatest steadiness was never in how much outer fame one owns but in the heart clearly knowing where it should go. When your heart has a harbor and a starting point of reliance, once the direction is set you can walk on unwaveringly, not lightly changing tracks. This chart tells you when to adjust the angle — and adjusting the angle is practice.

With the heart relying, life no longer loses its way. True refuge is the most solid harbor guiding the soul safely across the sea of suffering toward liberation. As long as faith does not waver, with the bright guidance of compass and chart, the soul can finally, fearless of life and death, reach straight the eternal far shore of ultimate liberation.
