Only Karma Follows You

📖Master’s Reading

Many assume there is plenty of time ahead and desperately pursue worldly wealth and family, overlooking the truest question: which comes first — tomorrow, or death? This can never be certain, for life comes with no guarantee.

In this Sahā world, over everything — money, fame, even this body of flesh — we in fact hold only a brief "right of use," never true "ownership." At the moment life reaches its end, not one worldly label can accompany us into the next world.

Since nothing can be carried away, what can we take? The only thing we can take is your "karma" — the "memory" accumulated in the subconscious across lifetimes. Karma is not vague and unreal but the soul's truest store of memory. If each day you are full of complaint and calculation, what you carry away is heavy negative karma; if each day you are willing to benefit beings and form wholesome connections, what you carry away is the merit of light.

Rather than fret over losing illusory worldly things, quietly consider: what kind of memory am I creating for the soul? Seize the arising thought of the present to do good and transform the mind — only the wholesome karma stored deep in the soul is the true, eternal wealth you can carry away and that can light your next life.

🌱Reflection for Daily Life

  • Nothing worldly can be carried away; only wholesome karma is eternal wealth.
  • Understand that over all worldly things you hold only a brief right of use.
  • Realize the impermanence of life and death; do not waste your good years.
  • Before sleep, reflect: what memory did I leave the soul today?
  • Seize the present, transform the mind and do good, accumulating the merit of light.
Teaching

Lifespan is uncertain as a bubble; death is like a lamp in the wind;

wealth and kin are never secure — only karma travels with you.
