Complete Guide to the Bardo | 7 Stages Across 49 Days After Death + Chanting & Liberation Q&A (Nyingma Tradition)

What is the bardo? What really happens in the 49 days after death? How should chanting support be done? This article follows the Nyingma Bardo Thödol (Liberation Through Hearing) tradition, together with Master Urgyen Topden Rinpoche's teachings in Master's Dharma Teachings Vol. 11 "Practice Determines Where You Go After Death" and Vols. 17–18 "Dialogues with the Soul," to clearly explain the 7 stages of the bardo and offer a liberation-rite Q&A.

What Is the Bardo?

Bardo (Tibetan: bar do) means "the transitional stage between two states." In the narrower sense, it refers to the state of consciousness between death and the next rebirth — up to 49 days. The Nyingma school divides it into six bardos, among which the most critical after death are the Dharmata Bardo and the Rebirth Bardo.

Why Are the 49 Days After Death So Important?

Every 7 days the bardo-being undergoes a "small death" and reboot. The 49 days are the golden rescue window during which the next rebirth has not yet been fixed:

- Days 1–7: Consciousness still clings to the body; terror and confusion are possible.

- Days 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, 49: seven "small death" nodes — the best moments for concentrated chanting support and merit dedication.

- Within 49 days, with guidance from a qualified lama plus continued merit dedication by family members, the deceased may be reborn in a higher realm or even in a Buddha field.

The 7 Stages of the Bardo — Quick Read

1. The Bardo of Dying (around the moment consciousness leaves the body): the final thought determines the direction — hence "the thought must be steady in daily life."

2. The Bardo of Dharmata-Luminosity (first 3–4 days): true Buddha-nature manifests; those with a foundation in practice can attain liberation at that very moment.

3. The Bardo of Rebirth (roughly days 5 to 49): consciousness begins seeking a new body.

4. The Illusion Stage: the bardo-being sees its own karma manifest as visions — love and hatred, fear, pursuit.

5. The Judgment Stage: folk tradition calls this the "Ten Kings of Hell"; in truth it is the display of one's own karma.

6. The Rebirth-Seeking Stage: pulled by karma toward the corresponding realm among the six.

7. Entry Into the Womb: the next life is formed.

Chanting Support and Liberation Rite Q&A

Q1: What should be chanted? Within how many days does it work?

The Avalokiteshvara mantra "Om Mani Padme Hum" is the most universally applicable. Continuous chanting plus merit dedication within 49 days is most powerful — especially concentrated recitation on days 7, 14, 21, 28, 35, 42, and 49.

Q2: Does the deceased know their family is chanting?

Yes. Rinpoche teaches in Master's Dharma Teachings that the bardo-being's perception is sharper than when alive. Family members' longing, resentment, and worry all reach them. This is why "letting go" matters — when the mind is settled, the deceased can proceed smoothly.

Q3: What matters most before cremation?

Try not to move the body immediately after the last breath; wait roughly 8 hours to let consciousness depart naturally. During this time, continue chanting beside the ear, and avoid loud weeping or arguing (which disturbs consciousness).

Q4: If the 49 days have passed, can the deceased still be liberated?

Yes. Once the bardo has passed, consciousness has already taken rebirth, but merit dedication through a puja can still be "added on" and will reach them wherever they are. This is why the Nyingma "Longchen Nyingtig Great Compassionate Avalokiteshvara Self-Liberation Through Suffering" puja can liberate deceased beings and karmic creditors from any era or any relationship.

Q5: Does prior practice during life make a difference?

Yes. Rinpoche says: "Practice is practicing how to die well." One who often recites mantras, generates virtuous thoughts, and dedicates merit during life — at the moment of death, the mind rests undisturbed, not swept up by fear. As he teaches in Master's Dharma Teachings Vol. 4: "In daily life, settle the thought; let the mind rest and be unmoved; lock the thought so it never moves — this is called the Vajra Mind."

Q6: How can I know my past lives and this life?

The true way is not fortune-telling or hypnotic regression but reading the clues in "the themes you keep encountering in this life":

- Repeatedly facing similar injuries → the knot may trace to the same source in a past life.

- Unexplained closeness to or aversion from a person → past-life affinity or grievance.

- Strong intuitive reactions to a certain kind of thing → a continuation of past-life habits.

Master's Dharma Teachings Vol. 5 "The Meaning of Rebirth in Human Life" gives a complete teaching.

Q7: What should family members mind during the 49-day bardo?

1. Continuous chanting support and merit dedication.

2. Do not weep or argue beside the body.

3. Concentrate puja dedication on the weekly nodes.

4. Let go of grudges and attachments (the hardest, but most effective).
