Karmic Creditors: You Are Repaying a Debt — Master Urgyen Topden Rinpoche on How to Resolve Them

When life keeps stalling and things go inexplicably wrong, elders often say it is your "karmic creditors" (yuanqin zhaizhu) coming to collect. So what are karmic creditors? Master Urgyen Topden Rinpoche says it plainly in his "Heart-to-Heart Talks": they are beings from past lives with whom you still hold grievance, debt, or unfinished karma. Their coming to collect is not Heaven being unfair — it means you still have a bill left unpaid. This article follows the Master's teaching to explain what karmic creditors really are, and how to resolve them.

You are not unlucky — you are repaying a debt

Many people toil their whole lives, yet money never stays; what they earn vanishes in a blink. This is not fate toying with you — this is you repaying a debt. You wronged someone in a past life, so in this life those karmic creditors intercept your wealth halfway. Those who keep having car accidents and must pay others' medical bills were often the ones who hurt others in a past life; now they must take the money they earn and use it to heal others.

Cause and effect are exact to the last measure — a precise, one-to-one collection. When you find yourself in constant accidents, your hard-earned money always slipping away through one mishap after another, even having to compensate others — take heed: it is not Heaven being unfair; it is the karmic creditors you owe from past lives, intercepting your wealth on the way.

The Master also uses a lawsuit as a metaphor: the karma of past and present lives has both a criminal and a civil side. Remember one line — if you do not settle the civil case, the criminal sentence falls hard. As long as you refuse to repay, refuse to reconcile, this illness, this misfortune, will be sentenced heavier and heavier. Conversely, once you are willing to repay and to reconcile, much of the suffering need not be borne so heavily.

How to resolve karmic creditors: the Master's three steps

The Master is very practical: resolving this is not about burning some spirit money and offering a few bows — you have to truly repay the debt and untie the knot. There are three steps.

Step one: repay to the point — make up exactly what you owe. The Master says the most important principle in mending your destiny is to "treat the right ailment": if you owe wealth, do the offering of wealth; if your health is poor, do the offering of medicine; if relationships are troubled, do the offering of flowers. In practice and smoke offering, for a debt of wealth add gold and silver leaf to repay; for health add medicinal herbs; for good affinity add dried flowers to burn. These concrete acts of compensation are how you show sincerity to your karmic creditors — a civil settlement. And remember: repay the urgent first. The most painful, most blocked place in your life is usually where you owe the most and must mend first. When the debt collectors are already at your door, running off to dedicate merit to creditors from tens of thousands of lifetimes ago only scatters your strength and solves nothing here and now. A hole in your finances — mend finances first; a health crisis — tend to health first; discord in relationships — mend affinity first.

Step two: put down that breath of anger in your heart. The Master says it bluntly: if you owed no one in this life, why would anyone come to collect? The resentment and anger you cannot release are like an invisible chain binding you to the past. The more you refuse to accept it and crave revenge, the deeper the two of you entangle — reborn again as each other's debt collectors, wounding each other on and on, a play that never ends. So the Master urges: do not resent for resentment's sake; give the other a way out — for sparing others is really sparing yourself. If you do not put down that anger, no amount of repaying will ever settle the debt clean.

Step three: dedicate the merit — and first, liberate yourself. Do not keep the merit only for yourself; when you bless, "offer it all out," dedicating it to the karmic creditors still waiting for release. Hoard merit for yourself and it only breeds their resentment, and you yourself cannot get well. And the Master stresses: the first one to liberate (超度) is your own heart. The karmic creditors around you, your ancestors, your parents — all are bound tightly to your soul. If you are still trapped in resentment and fear, that pain resonates back and makes them suffer too; only when you settle first and put your own heart down can that light of merit turn back to liberate the kin and creditors around you.

Not sure what you owe? That is why you need a master

Here many people get stuck: what exactly do I owe? Which should I mend first? This is precisely why you need a qualified master. Rinpoche has the power to see cause and effect — he can see the root of your obstacles, and at the karmic-creditor puja guide you to the point: whether to make the offering of wealth, medicine, or flowers, and which debt to repay first, settling and reconciling step by step.

Fahsilin's karmic-creditor puja, presided over by Master Urgyen Topden Rinpoche, is here to help you complete this settlement: repaying the debt through sincere repentance and the merit of practice — treating the right ailment, letting go of resentment, dedicating merit and liberating. We do not burn spirit money; what matters is sincere repentance, letting go, and dedicating merit through good deeds.
