Is the Earth a Prison? The Atmosphere, the Twelve Earthly Branches as "Shackles," and the Twelve Generals' Secret of Escape (Master Urgyen Topden Rinpoche)

Is the Earth really a prison? This article faithfully records Master Urgyen Topden Rinpoche's teaching of 17 July 2026 (organized from the original words, unaltered). From the atmosphere, gravity, the twelve Earthly Branches as "shackles," and the "net of heaven and earth" formed by the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, it explains why beings are trapped in saṃsāra — and the secret method of escape: practising the Twelve Generals to remove the shackles, practising the Medicine Buddha method to move the Heavenly Stems, seizing the moment of "reaching through heaven and earth," and finally refining the soul's light-point to break through the atmosphere and reach the Big Dipper. (This is an organized record of a lineage teaching; much of it is deep contemplative practice and metaphor, offered for study only.)

The Atmosphere: the "High-Voltage Wall" Outside the Earth-Prison

The Master teaches: you can picture the atmosphere as the "high-voltage wall" outside a prison. Without the atmosphere, the earth would long ago have been destroyed — because every meteor and meteorite, the moment it enters the earth, would soon cause devastation, and it is the atmosphere that destroys them. A meteorite begins to burn the moment it passes through the atmosphere, so that by the time it falls to the ground almost only a small piece remains. Without the atmosphere as a defence system, those huge fragments of heavenly bodies would long ago have smashed the earth apart.

Gravity = the Handcuffs and Shackles: Keeping Memory and the Life-Soul on Earth

So this whole structure was deliberately arranged. You can see the earth as a prison: for fear you might escape, the atmosphere is set around it as a high-voltage net. And "gravity" is like handcuffs and shackles — it keeps you from leaving the ground and keeps all your memory on earth. When a person dies they are buried in the ground; your DNA and all your information are still buried below — so among the three souls, the "life-soul" (sheng-hun) is lodged on earth.

The Twelve Earthly Branches: a Death-Row Convict's Shackles, the Bottom Row of the Eight Characters

Who has detained you? Gravity. The earth's gravity has twelve rays — the twelve Earthly Branches: Zi, Chou, Yin, Mao, Chen, Si, Wu, Wei, Shen, You, Xu, Hai. These are the bottom row of your Eight Characters (Bazi), like the shackles of a death-row convict, binding you fast and keeping you on earth. High-voltage above, shackles below — where can you run? This is why so many cannot accomplish their practice.

To Cross the Atmosphere: Your Energy Must Be Stronger Than the High Voltage

Many cannot accomplish their practice precisely because they cannot remove the shackles nor cross the high-voltage of the atmosphere, so they can only keep revolving in saṃsāra, forever trapped on earth. How do we leave? The point of practising now is to make this "energy-point" strong enough. The earth binds our body, but it cannot bind the soul. To break through this high-voltage layer:

first, it takes speed;
second, an ordinary soul is destroyed the instant it touches the layer;
third, only if you are stronger than it can it fail to stop you — your energy must be stronger than the high voltage.

After Breaking Out You Are an "Immortal" — but Immortals Too Have Rebirth

After breaking out of the atmosphere, if you have not yet reached the Big Dipper, this stage is called an "immortal" (xian) in the Taoist arts — for example a Da-Luo celestial immortal. They can fly to the Numinous Empyrean Palace beyond the ninth heaven, but they cannot go higher. Do you think immortals have nothing to do and just roam about? In fact they are still cultivating — in many mountain caves in mainland China, Da-Luo celestial immortals and those on the immortal path are still practising austerely, hoping to rise to a higher stage (such as the Thirty-Three Heavens) and avoid falling again. For immortals too have rebirth — sometimes once in a thousand years, sometimes two thousand — depending on how complete their energy is.

Why Practise the Twelve Generals? They Help You Remove the Shackles

Why keep stressing that the "Twelve Generals" must be practised? Because the Twelve Generals are connected to these twelve shackles, and they can help you remove them — and these shackles are the "twelve Earthly Branches." Gravity draws out twelve chains that bind your destiny and your soul, keeping you from leaving; those are the twelve Earthly Branches in the bottom row of your Eight Characters.

Why can the twelve Earthly Branches determine whether you walk the path of Seven Killings, Indirect Resource, Direct Resource, or Eating God and Hurting Officer? This shows exactly how your destiny is bound by these shackles — it governs your course and life direction. The secret of the twelve Earthly Branches is finally governed by the Twelve Generals; so practising the Twelve Generals can change the energy of the Branches and remedy flaws in the Branch-structure of your Eight Characters. (For the actual "roll-call" activation method of the Twelve Generals, see "How to Truly Activate the Twelve Generals — Point-Naming the Organs and Meridians and Subtle-Body Practice.")

Practising the Medicine Buddha Method Moves the "Heavenly Stems": the Net of Heaven and Earth and the Ten Stems' Rescue

Practising the Medicine Buddha method can change the energy of the "Heavenly Stems." The Heavenly Stems are what receive and guide us: the energies of heaven are ten (the ten Heavenly Stems), the energies of earth are twelve (the twelve Earthly Branches); the Stems' energy comes down, the Branches' energy goes up, and this forms the "net of heaven and earth." Caught in the middle, we are helpless — everyone's feet are bound by chains; you want to rise but are pulled back down. The buddhas and gods above want to save you but cannot pull you up — because the chains of the Branches hold you. So the ten Heavenly Stems are the ten rescuing energies of the cosmos, the four characters in the top row of your Eight Characters.

Reaching Through Heaven and Earth: the "Jailbreak Moment" of Right Timing and Angle

So how do we break out and escape? Whenever a Heavenly Stem has a chance to descend, that is "reaching through heaven and earth." Seizing the moment when the Branches open a gap and connect to a certain Stem, you can shoot out in an instant — that is your "jailbreak moment." As long as the timing and the angle are right, gods above will come to receive you, and you can escape smoothly. It is like finding a common point between the Branches and the Stems: the cosmos's ship lets down a beam of light, and you rise along that light — this is called reaching through heaven and earth. This is a very great secret!

Refining the Soul's Light-Point: the Casket-Seal Dhāraṇī and the Golden Light Mantra Make the Cells Shine

The "Dhāraṇī of the Secret Whole-Body Relic Casket-Seal of the Heart of All Tathāgatas" must be practised; it helps your cells emit light. This shares the same aim as the Taoist "Golden Light Mantra." The Taoist Golden Light Mantra is a practice that makes your cells shine; after they shine, all the energy is condensed, condensed down to a single brightest light-point — that is the innermost core of the soul, the most refined and complete energy. That light-point pierces time and space at extreme speed over vast distance, and can fly directly to the Big Dipper and the Pole Star. If you have not refined that clear energy, the soul can reach the atmosphere at most and go no higher. Refining this light-point is precisely so that you are not destroyed when passing through the atmosphere; many souls, for lack of energy, are destroyed by the atmosphere the moment they rise.

Why is the earth called a prison?

It is the Master's metaphor — the atmosphere is like a high-voltage wall outside a prison, gravity is like handcuffs and shackles, and the twelve Earthly Branches in the bottom row of the Eight Characters chain the soul and destiny to earth. High-voltage above and shackles below, so beings are trapped in saṃsāra and can hardly get free.

What do the Twelve Generals have to do with Bazi destiny?

The Twelve Generals govern the twelve Earthly Branches. The Branches steer the course of your destiny (Seven Killings, Indirect/Direct Resource, Eating God, Hurting Officer…), like shackles; practising the Twelve Generals helps "remove the shackles," change the Branches' energy, and remedy the Branch-structure of your Eight Characters. Practising the Medicine Buddha method moves the energy of the "Heavenly Stems."

What is "reaching through heaven and earth"?

The ten Heavenly Stems above receive and guide, the twelve Earthly Branches below restrain, forming the net of heaven and earth. When the Branches open a gap and connect to a certain Stem, that is the "jailbreak moment" — with the right timing and angle, gods above let down a beam of light to receive you, and rising along it you get free. That is reaching through heaven and earth.
