Why Perform Liberation Rites in the Seventh Month? Dedicating Merit to Ancestors and Karmic Creditors — with the Longchen Nyingtik Great Compassion Avalokiteśvara Great Puja (5 September)

The seventh lunar month (Zhongyuan) is a season for dedicating liberation esteemed in both Chinese and Tibetan Buddhism. Many wish to pray for departed ancestors and relatives, and for the karmic creditors and unborn children of many lifetimes, yet are unsure what "liberation" (chöten) actually does, or how to take part. This article briefly explains, and includes information on Fahsilin's Great Liberation Puja this year.

What Is Liberation (Chöten)?

Liberation, or the dedication of merit for the deceased, uses the Dharma to guide the departed, karmic creditors and connected beings to leave suffering and take a favourable rebirth.

For the living, it also carries the meaning of resolving old enmities, dispelling obstacles, and bringing peace to the home.

Why Is the Seventh Month Special?

The seventh month is a season especially suited to widely liberating the departed, resolving enmities, and accumulating merit — particularly fitting for dedicating liberation to ancestors and departed relatives.

Who Should Register?

Those wishing to dedicate liberation for ancestors and departed relatives.

Those wishing to resolve matters with karmic creditors, unborn children and earth-lords, praying for smoothness and peace.

Those seeking to avert misfortune for a company or business and to liberate the karmic creditors of the enterprise.

Place: Urgyen Fahsilin Buddhist Association, Zhubei, Hsinchu.

Presided over in person by Urgyen Topden Rinpoche, following the Longchen Nyingtik "Great Compassion Avalokiteśvara Self-Liberation" practice.

Yes, and you may also dedicate liberation together for departed relatives, pets and earth-lords, as well as avert misfortune for a company and liberate the karmic creditors of the enterprise.
