Who Is Avalokiteśvara? The Thousand-Armed and Great Compassion Forms Are His Manifestations

Avalokiteśvara (Guanyin) is the bodhisattva of great compassion who hears the cries of the world and comes to its aid, responding to beings in hundreds and thousands of forms.

The "Thousand-Armed Avalokiteśvara" signifies a thousand hands that protect and a thousand eyes that watch over; the "Great Compassion Avalokiteśvara" reveals the vow to relieve suffering — whatever the form, it is the compassion of one and the same Avalokiteśvara.

Urgyen Topden Rinpoche teaches: the buddhas exist as light, not as physical bodies. Form is a skilful means; the luminosity of compassion is the essence.

The Heart-Mantra of Avalokiteśvara: The Six Syllables "Oṃ maṇi padme hūṃ"

The six-syllable mantra is the very heart-mantra of Avalokiteśvara, the most widespread and important mantra of Tibetan Buddhism.

The master teaches that these six syllables are not merely a sound of prayer for safety, but a "signpost home": reciting "Oṃ maṇi padme hūṃ" seals the entrances to the six realms of saṃsāra, leaving open only the direction of the pure lotus world.

The Master's Secret: Why One Adds the Syllable "Shé" at Death

The master especially urges that at the very end one add a syllable, "shé" — for "shé" is the seed syllable of Avalokiteśvara and Amitābha, representing the pure world of light.

At the great passage of life and death, as the breath is about to stop, recite "Oṃ maṇi padme hūṃ shé," with the sound directed upward, clearly declaring, "I am going to Avalokiteśvara."

The human body has seven windows through which the soul may leave, like seven lotuses; reciting the six-syllable mantra closes the lotuses one by one, leaving open only the door of the buddha path at the crown.
